On December 6, 2022, Georgia held a runoff election for one of the state's Senate seats, featuring candidates Senator Raphael Warnock (D) and Herschel Walker (R), after no candidate in the initial Senate election held on November 8, 2022 received more than 50% of the votes. The result of the runoff was the election of incumbent candidate, Senator Raphael Warnock. Senator Warnock's election is the final Senate race of the 2022 midterm elections to be called, giving Democrats a 51-49 majority in the chamber.
In the initial November 8, 2022 election, Sen. Warnock received 49.43% of the votes and Herschel Walker received 48.5% of the votes, as reported by the Associated Press. Georgia's election laws, which differ from much of the country, require that Senate candidates receive at least 50% of the votes, not just the plurality of the votes, to be elected. In cases such as this year' when no candidate received at least 50% of the votes, a runoff election is held between the top two candidates.
In the runoff election, as reported on nytimes.com, citing data from the Associated Press, Senator Warnock won with 51.4% of the votes; Herschel Walker received 48.6% of the votes.
Senator Warnock was quoted on nbcnews.com saying, "After a hard-fought campaign - or should I say campaigns - it is my honor to utter the four most powerful words ever spoken in a democracy: The people have spoken."
