The United States Congress has until this Friday, November 17, 2023, to pass funding resolutions that would prevent a partial government shutdown, which would go into effect beginning Saturday, November 18, 2023.
As reported on Reuters.com, recently elected Speaker of the House Mike Johnson (R-LA) has proposed a two-step stopgap bill that would not cut spending, with some House Republicans pushing back on this proposal. The two-step continuing resolution (CR) proposal would provide short term funding for military construction, veterans benefits, transportation, housing and urban development, agriculture, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), and energy and water programs through January 19, 2024; and for all other federal operations until February 2, 2024.
Speaker Johnson was quoted saying, "I am committed to returning Washington to regular order, but you can't fix a decades-old broken system in a matter of weeks."
A Senate Democratic leadership aide was quoted saying, "It's a good thing the Speaker didn't include unnecessary cuts and kept defense funding with the second group of programs."
House Republicans are currently aiming to hold a vote on Tuesday, November 14, 2023.
