A new report from FAIR Health, Trends in Mental Health Conditions: An Analysis of Private Healthcare Claims, which analyzed more than 46 billion healthcare claim records from 2019 to 2023, found that over that time, the percentage of patients who received medical services and had mental health diagnoses rose 39.8%, from 13.5% of patients who received medical services in 2019 to 18.9% in 2023.
The report also identified the five most common mental health diagnoses in 2023, as measured by the percentage of patients with these diagnoses out of all patients who received medical services in that year, were generalized anxiety disorder, major depressive disorder, attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), adjustment disorders, and bipolar disorder.
Additionally, the percentage of medical claims associated with mental health diagnoses increased 30.5% nationally, from 3.8% of medical claims in 2019 to 5% of claims in 2023.
